Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed Columbia Pictures film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish centres on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest…and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales.
Working with 5-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman and long-time collaborator Julian Crouch, 59’s Benjamin Pearcy produced the fantasy world at the centre of the show, while keeping the old-fashioned, hand-painted feel of the scenic design. Using a technique of projected painted backdrops back onto themselves to add depth and detail, Big Fish marked a development of both 59’s approach to animation and its use of scenic design.
